Hacktoberfest is a month-long developer festival to promote open source. Hacktoberfest occurs every October. In 2022 hacktoberfest was presented by DigitalOcean, appwrite, and docker in collaboration with other organizations. Developers from all around the world can take part in this event. It is not even limited to age, experience, or coders. Anyone can participate and can scale up their skills. This blog post is all about getting a glimpse of open source and also how can you be part of Hacktoberfest and what is it.

The main purpose of hacktoberfest is to encourage developers to contribute to open source projects and practice programming by participating in solving problems in open source projects.

Let’s see what is open source.

Open source projects are the projects that are hosted as publicly accessible. Being a publicly active repository it can have a border number of communities and developers.

Software like Linux, Mozilla Firefox, WordPress, Android, VLC, and many more are the result of open source.

Open source has a large number of non-coders, coders, maintainers, and contributors. It doesn’t have certain boundaries to contribute. If you like to contribute just fork and run and write a good commit and make some good pull requests.

Who can participate Hacktoberfest?

Anyone who is willing to contribute to open-source can participate hacktoberfest. You can participate hacktoberfest as a maintainer or contributor.

What’s New in Hacktoberfest 2022

Hacktoberfest 2022 encourages low-code and non-code contributions, which can be done through blog posts, translating content, graphic design, and more. The contributions must be tracked through GitHub Pull Requests as other types of contributions.

Why should you participate in Hacktoberfest?

While working on an open source project, you can learn a lot of new things, and will also gain exposure to the fantastic open source community, which will eventually help you further your career.

And hacktoberfest is a great place to begin your open-source journey.

How to participate Hacktoberfest?

As mentioned before There are two types of people who participate in Hacktoberfest.

  • The people who maintain — look after open source projects.
  • The people who contribute to open source projects.

For maintainers:

  • Make a repository if you don't have one.
  • Add a topic hacktoberfest-accepted to your project repository.
  • Provide guidelines on what pattern people should contribute.
  • Review and merge the changes/contributions people make.

For Contributers:

  • Click fork on the top right corner of a repository. An online copy of the repo will be made on your account.
  • Clone the repository on your computer or just press the "." button in your keyboard on the repository screen to open VS code Web.
  • Do the changes you want to and commit them.
  • Once you do these steps, you will see an option "Compare & Pull Request", or you can just go to the parent repository and go to the pull requests section and make a pull request.
  • Write about whatever changes you added.
  • Wait for me to review your changes and merge the valid ones into the master branch.
